In 2020, visual artists Miriam Sentler and Wouter Osterholt set up an interdisciplinary research initiative: Deep Time Agency. 

DTA is designed as a multi-year research project with different case studies in a variety of industrially changed landscapes, wherein we recontextualize archaeological and historical objects in collaboration with residents, stakeholders, and institutions. 


Our projects deal with the complex question of how ancient relationships to land and material might still resonate within contemporary society. We are not interested in nostalgia, but in creating situations where imagination and collective participation can open new ways of relating to (post)industrial environments. 
In a time marked by ecological, social, and political crises, our artistic work asks how collective rituals might help in shaping new ways of relating to the landscapes we are fundamentally part of.

Bog Guardians reacts to the building of a planned wind farm in a bog landscape, resulting in considerable protest from local heritage and wildlife conservation groups. 


The industrial development, currently in the pre-planning stage, is executed by the former peat extraction company Bord na Móna (BnM). The company has rebranded itself as a renewable energy provider, building wind turbines and solar farms on its former peat excavation sites. For Lemanaghan, they envision the installation of 15 wind turbines total, each with a height of up to 220 meters, sufficient to power approximately 55,000 Irish homes annually.


In response to the heated debate about the plans for a future wind farm, Deep Time Agency looked at archeological remains discovered in peat lands, nowadays excavated for wind farm construction. In doing so, they investigated how peatland archaeology can help in moving the green energy debate forward, therefore researching material ties between the past and the future of energy landscapes. 
The flying of kites functioned as an alternative form of protest in the project, meant to break open the “heavy” debate through a seemingly light-hearted activity. While flying fifteen different kites at the exact locations of the proposed wind turbines, DTA mapped both the natural and social landscape underneath, creating space for conversations with the community. Together with different locals, they then reflected on the consequences of the transformation of the local (energy) landscape: from an industrial peat bog to a large-scale wind farm.

The kites are decorated with paintings of body parts and clothes, found in Irish bogs during centuries of peat excavations. Together, they depict various objects spontaneously archived by the peat, recontextualized to “flag” community’s concerns about the wind turbine project and its potentially destructive effect on local wildlife, culture, and heritage.&#38;nbsp;
The grim visual language of the archaeological remains could meanwhile be interpreted as a warning for the consequences of our relentless reliance on economic progress and unregulated hyper-capitalism, which has become a global threat in times of climate change. As ‘resistance spirits’ from the past, the bog bodies are evidence of the rich archaeological record of the peatlands, symbolizing the community’s concerns about the windfarm and its potentially destructive effect on local wildlife and heritage.

The Shetland Islands are a Scottish archipelago that lies approximately 480 kilometres north of Edinburgh and 320 kilometres west of Bergen, on the crossroads between Norway, Scotland, and the Faroe Islands. Shetland houses Sullom Voe, one of the biggest oil terminals in Europe. During peak times, up to 1.5 million barrels of oil enter the archipelago daily from the oil platforms in the North Sea to be stored in underground containers. Afterwards, they are shipped to ports worldwide. The archipelago is also a major player in wind and tidal energy. 

Some of the energy industry’s traces are more visible than others for the 23,000 inhabitants living there. The ways these industries have changed island life and natural environments throughout history are often discussed, performed, and criticized by members of the Shetland community. Examples are the short theatre acts that happen in the framework of the carnivalesque Up Helly Aa festival. A handful of historical acts from between 1972 and 2003 found in the Shetland Archives and the Up Helly Aa Committee Archive reference the energy industry through a critical lens and a specific aesthetic, marked by costumes, props, songs, and so on.
In light of the opening of the new Rosebank oil field north-west of Shetland (planned to start operating in 2026), it is time again for these discourses to re-emerge. TMET uses re-enactment and performative intervention to bring back and revive 8 selected energy acts from the archives. For this purpose, costumes and props were recreated and placed back into the industrial environments the acts discussed and critiqued once, letting interactions around them unfold spontaneously. In this way, the costumes become creative tools for conversations around energy, which allow for contemporary discussion about what roles these industries play in the Shetlanders’ lives today.

Deep Time Agency has been selected as one of the participating artists in the Your Water Our Water exhibition cycle, taking place throughout 2024 in three art spaces along the Donau river. For the project, Deep Time Agency has been concerned with the critical rethinking of objects used in the “renaturalisation” of the Danube river, “making-up” for the river’s canalisation practice in relation to shipping and hydro-energy.&#38;nbsp;
We are especially interested in the idea of using so-called “Raubäume;’’ dead trees that are artificially introduced to the riverbed to make it look natural again. 
Our idea merged the industrial “founding fathers” of the modern Danube with the material entity of the Raubäume, transforming them into “floating fathers.” The exhibition on view in the three exhibition venues showed several smaller maquette prototypes that formed the basis for a larger sculpture in public space, that was brought back to the Danube river during a performance in Belgrade, held in December 2024.


During the performance at U10 Art Space, Deep Time Agency took the public on a guided tour through the city centre of Belgrade and down to the Danube river, accompanied by a larger scale model of one of their floating fathers: István Széchenyi&#38;nbsp; (1791–1860). During the walk, the public acquired insights into the history of the Danube river, learning more about its construction history.The project, that is also on show at the exhibition, critically commemorates 19th century industrialists, engineers, and statesmen that played an important role in the cultivation and canalisation of the Danube river. While the taming of the river was seen as a heroic deed just hundred years ago, nowadays we face the direct and indirect consequences of these historical figures’ actions, and many ecological projects concerned with “re-wildering” the Danube are currently under way. As part of these re-wildering projects dead trees are placed in the riverbed to restore a deep time image of the Danube. With their project, DTA thinks about the role of the sculptures of the historical statesmen in these practices, reuniting them with the contemporary river in new and exciting ways.

Gods of the Anthropocene is a continuation of DTA’s previous project&#38;nbsp;Ancestors Rising (2022). In both works, we focus on Mesolithic antler headdresses that were found in industrial or modern landscapes in Germany. The antlers, representing rare archeological objects, were most likely part of a shamanic garb, worn during important ceremonies in the stone age. They might have symbolized a connection with the wider universe, reaching out into the cosmos from the top of the head like antennae, channeling messages from higher spirits. Both works reactivate the prehistoric antler artefacts through public, site-specific interventions on their exact finding locations.

Central to the project is a replica of a 11.000-year-old antler headdress that was found in 1953 in Berlin, on the premises of the modern neighbourhoods Biesdorf, Marzahn and Hellersdorf. In anticipation of a new archeological excavation in the area, the project revisits the location and reinterprets the object and its purpose within an anthropogenic context. The replica is used as a boompole for two condenser microphones and as such redesigned into a communication device to talk to inhabitants near the findsite.&#38;nbsp;
During several days of recording, DTA documents the journey through the neighborhood, asking inhabitants how they see their role as the new “Gods of the Anthropocene”. By doing so, the work emphasises that the challenges with which inhabitants are faced in times of climate crisis are not new. At the end of the last ice age, the climate also changed rapidly, meaning that the first inhabitants of this area had to adapt to unpredictable weather patterns previously. The warming period was characterized by strong climate fluctuations, making it difficult for people to survive. They depended on many factors, such as weather and the migration patterns of the animals they hunted. They lived as nomads and their fate lay in the hands of the weather gods and other deities they worshipped. The Mesolithic shaman created change in the physical world from the visions he received from the universe, affecting health, fertility, crops and hunt.
The object reconnects us back to a time when humans still saw themselves as part of the natural environment, slowly discovering agriculture and the usage of fire while also trying to find a balance between the human usages of resourches and the grace of natural gods. Rituals of sacrifice were meant to keep the gods satisfied and the humans in check with the forces of nature, contributing to a holistic balance with their surroundings. In the industrial era and the Anthropocene, this balance has been disturbed. In this project we revisit this important moment in human evolution by reactivating the headdress on the location where it was originally found and instead of asking the gods for help, we turn to the people themselves. The final result of the work will be in the form of a sound piece.

Deep Time Agency proudly presents its first solo exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut. A multi-year, artistic research initiative, the agency 
re-contextualises archaeological and paleontological objects in (post-)industrial landscapes, in collaboration with local residents, stakeholders and institutions. The result is a series of case studies that highlights changing landscapes and found objects and brings them together in an overarching artistic project.

The first four parts, Descent into the Future (2020), Concrete Reef (2022), Ancestors Rising (2022) and Swamp Palace (2022), can now be seen in Gallery 3. The long, vertical space of Gallery 3 functions as a mineshaft in this exhibition, highlighting various finds from geological layers and excavation sites explored in the agency’s different projects.

04. &#38;nbsp; Swamp Palace (2022)

The project is commissioned by Museum Bommel van Dam and Odapark, Venlo/Venray (NL) and was on view at Odapark and in the city center of Tegelen from the 9th of july until the 5th of october 2022

Deep Time Agency`s project for ‘Nieuwe Uitzichten’ focuses on the area around the former town hall of Tegelen. At the start of its construction, there was a lot of discussion about the choice of location. Many inhabitants thought that the ground would be too wet, not suitable for such a stately building. The town hall was jokingly called the ‘Swamp Palace’. Deep Time Agency takes this history as a starting point to reflect on the ecological future of the city. The plan is to transform the town hall into an actual swamp palace in order to discuss the historical and future construction of the landscape of Tegelen.Starting point of the intervention is the imaginary primeval forest of Tegelen, as renowned paleoanthropologist Eugène Dubois (1858-1940)&#38;nbsp;reconstructed it a hundred years ago on Landgoed de Bedelaar near Haelen. At the beginning of the last century, Dubois created an exotic (water) landscape on his estate, based on the discovery of fossilised seeds from the former Tegelen clay quarries. His idea was to redevelop the landscape after its industrial exhaustion. 

Following Dubois’ forgotten experiment, Deep Time Agency undertakes a similar experiment, this time in the city center of Tegelen. They believe that the imagination needed to visualize the growth of a primeval forest in Tegelens city centre undermines the short-term thinking that characterizes the current climate crisis. 

The work consists of three parts: an intervention during the manifestation of ‘Nieuwe Uitzichten’ in the form of a market stall, a&#38;nbsp;virtual AR (Augmented Reality) and a physical intervention around the town hall in the form of a sculpture. At the market stall, Deep Time Agency hands out bags of seed to visitors, derived from Dubois’fossilised finds. The virtual layer shows the plants and trees that can emerge from these seeds in the long term, transforming the town hall into a wild ‘swamp palace’. The visitor can enter the imaginary primeval forest via an app, after which they receive a bag with seeds for their own garden. In a sculpture, an ambivalent collection of plants from Dubois’ collection grows all together: a concentration of Dubois’ wild ecological experiment on the Bedelaar estate. The sculpture consists of bricks, in which the names of the 92 types of fossil seeds that arise from the ground are engraved.

In 2020, the exploitation of limestone ceased in the ENCI quarry. &#38;nbsp;A historical moment, especially considering that limestone has been mined for 2500 years in South Limburg. From 1925 onwards, exploitation was increased and the extracted limestone was turned into cement: a process in which a lot of CO2 was released into the atmosphere.
In addition to its industrial purpose, the ENCI quarry was a special place for archaeological and paleontological research. Fossils in this area are especially well preserved due to the soft limestone. The prehistoric sea that once stretched over this landscape was teeming with plants and animals such as fish, sea urchins, bryozoans, coral and shells. In the last century, three world-famous mosasaur skeletons were found in the Sint Pietersberg and the marl quarry. These rare finds made the ENCI into a popular site for fossil collectors. 

After the closure of the factory, the area is now supervised by Natuurmonumenten, which aims to break down the industrial buildings and redevelop the area into a nature preservation area. This new vision is opposed by Rijksmonumenten, who wants to keep the industrial buildings in place in order to safeguard the industrial history of the landscape. 


The transformation from post-industrial area to new nature reserve, with half of the quarry being flooded in order to create a new lake, sounds like a desirable development after so many years of industry. However, more than half of the post-industrial lakes in Europe are not viable due to unwanted chemical residues in the water, originating from the industrial past. The problem reflects the indirect impact on marine ecosystems worldwide, threatened with extinction by the significant CO2 emissions of companies such as the ENCI. The cement industry itself is responsible for 8 percent of the world's total CO2 emissions; a significant percentage in daunting times of climate crisis. This complex issue raised the question of whether we could use the industrial and fossilized past of the site to benefit the (local) ecology, meanwhile highlighting the conflicts between different parties in the redevelopment phase.
In the spring of 2021, Deep Time Agency traveled to various archaeology museums in the Netherlands in order to retrace fossils that originate from the ENCI quarry. These were documented using scientific drawings, which were then used to replicate the fossils, using marl and cement quarried from the ENCI area. By doing so, we used the last bags of the ENCI cement from the quarry in Maastricht in a ceremonial way. During a workshop in the quarry, we involved students from the Maastricht Institute of Arts, whom we invited during a minor to help us in the production of the fossil replicas. 

The replicas were ultimately brought together in a sculpture. The construction is made from metal and concrete replicas and its form is inspired by a star constellation, referring to the name that the coral fossils from this area acquired during medieval times: star-stones. This name was derived from the surfaces of the fossils, which, according to some, resembled stars. At the bottom of the ENCI lake, the sculpture will function as an artificial reef, creating a new habitat and benefiting new lifeforms in the post-modern environment. Research in Germany shows that placing similar concrete structures greatly benefits the development of post-industrial lakes. Concrete structures provide hiding places for fish and snails, which will die eventually and sink to the bottom of the lake, after which they may become new fossils and resources again. Our hope is that in the long term, our project will promote the growth of new ecosystems, closing the cycle 
of this landscape and forming an ecological gesture towards the future.
